As Goostudios celebrates 22 years, we reflect on the industry’s transformation.

As Goostudios celebrates 22 years this month, it’s fun to think about how much our industry has evolved. It reminds us that we don’t know what we’re doing because we’re always in a state of learning. There’s new gear to explore, new methods to master, and new tools to discover- exciting innovations that we’re always implementing to keep our friends fresh and ahead of the curve.

From 2003 to 2025, small production companies like ours have seen incredible advancements that have lowered costs, improved quality, and expanded creative possibilities. What once required massive budgets and specialized equipment is now achievable with accessible tools that benefit us and our friends.

Early 2000s-2010: The Shift to Digital

When we launched in 2003, we relied on MiniDV tapes and early digital cameras. For a whopping resolution of 1080i, editing suites required expensive hardware and software.  4:3 aspect ratios were the norm for broadcast stations and you were cool if you rocked the 16:9 black bars. This throwback was shot and edited using that format. At the time producing high-quality video was costly, making professional production less accessible to smaller businesses and independent creators.

By the late 2000s, DSLRs like the Canon 5D Mark II (2008) changed the game by offering cinema-quality footage at a fraction of the cost. We finally had a digital shallow depth of field! When using these cameras, we recorded audio separately and used 👏 claps to help synch things up in post. Footage and audio were captured to cards and it was common practice to have extra hands at shoots to transfer and rename the files, especially if multiple cameras were rolling.  This commercial was shot using DSLRs. Reach expanded when platforms like YouTube (launched in 2005) created new distribution channels, allowing small companies to showcase their work without needing traditional broadcasters.

2010-2020: Affordable Cinematic Production

The 2010s marked the rise of 4K video, mirrorless cameras, and high-end post-production tools. Cameras like the Sony A7 series, Blackmagic Design’s Pocket Cinema Camera, and (our favorite) Canon EOS C300 Mark I-III allowed us to produce content that rivaled major studios.

Editing software improved and sharing projects became easier. Adobe Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, and cloud-based collaboration tools allowed teams to work remotely and efficiently. The rise of drone cinematography also allowed us to capture stunning aerial shots without renting helicopters or cranes.

For our friends, this meant higher production value at lower costs, making professional video marketing, corporate storytelling, and branded content more attainable.

2020-2025: AI, Virtual Production & Real-Time Rendering

The 2020s have brought AI-driven tools, virtual production, and automation, further empowering small production houses like ours. AI-powered editing, plus real-time video enhancement and rendering, speeds up post-production. This is a game-changer for those looking for high-end commercial, corporate, and social media content without the Hollywood price tag.

Short-form video continues to dominate platforms like TikTok, Instagram Reels, and YouTube Shorts, requiring production teams to create fast, engaging content. AI-driven captioning, automated color grading, and enhanced mobile shooting capabilities mean we can deliver polished content quickly.
